Overview

Some posters are created by you in the Studio, and some are created with help from us.

Tell Your Trail creates made-to-order wall art inspired by trails, routes, races, road trips and outdoor adventures.

Some designs are created directly by customers using our Studio. Others are based on existing Tell Your Trail designs that customers personalize. We may also offer manual customization or fully bespoke design work.

This policy explains how those Studio and custom orders work.

It should be read together with our:

  • Terms of Service;
  • Refunds, Returns & Cancellations Policy;
  • Shipping & Delivery Policy;
  • Privacy Policy;
  • Cookie Policy.

What this policy covers

This policy applies whenever your poster is created or changed using your choices, content or route information.

This policy applies to:

  • Studio-created posters;
  • posters created from uploaded route files;
  • posters created from route data, waypoints, markers or location information;
  • existing Tell Your Trail designs that you personalize yourself;
  • titles, subtitles, names, dates, quotes, colors, statistics or other details added by you;
  • manual customization requests;
  • fully bespoke design work;
  • custom digital PNG files, where offered.

A product may be treated as personalized or custom even if the changes are small, such as a title, name, date, route statistic, color choice, location marker or custom subtitle.

Studio-created self-designed posters

When you create a poster in the Studio, the preview before checkout is the design you are asking us to produce.

Our Studio may allow you to create a poster yourself by uploading route information, choosing a layout, changing colors, adding text, selecting statistics, adjusting markers or personalizing other design elements.

For Studio-created designs, the preview shown in the Studio before checkout is your proof to approve — it's the exact version we'll prepare for printing, and we don't send separate proof afterwards.

Before placing your order, please carefully check:

  • spelling;
  • names;
  • dates;
  • titles and subtitles;
  • quotes;
  • route lines;
  • waypoint names and markers;
  • statistics;
  • colors;
  • layout;
  • size;
  • orientation;
  • any other personalized details.

If you place an order after reviewing the Studio preview, you confirm that the design is ready to be produced.

Personalizing existing Tell Your Trail designs

You may be able to personalize existing designs by changing selected details yourself.

Some existing Tell Your Trail designs may allow self-service personalization. Depending on the product, you may be able to change or add details such as:

  • title;
  • subtitle;
  • names;
  • dates;
  • route or adventure statistics;
  • colors;
  • quotes;
  • event details;
  • selected markers or locations;
  • other available design options.

The available personalization options may vary by product.

You are responsible for checking all personalized details before placing your order. If a spelling mistake, wrong date, incorrect name or other customer-entered error is visible before checkout, we are not responsible for correcting it after production unless we choose to do so.

Manual customization and bespoke design work

Manual custom orders are checked and approved by email before printing.

We may offer manual customization or fully bespoke design work.

Manual customization may include smaller changes to an existing design, such as text, color, route detail, statistics or layout adjustments.

Bespoke design work may include creating a new or highly customized design based on your route, event, trail, adventure or instructions.

For manual customization or bespoke work:

  • we may ask you for additional details before starting;
  • we may refuse a request if it is not suitable for our design style, tools, product range or production process;
  • timelines may depend on the complexity of the request and how quickly you respond;
  • revision limits, pricing and scope may be shown on the product page, agreed by email, or confirmed before work starts.

For manual customization and bespoke design work, we always send you a draft by email before printing. Please check it carefully — spelling, names, dates, quotes, route details, colors, layout, size, orientation, and any other custom details shown in the draft — and give us your approval in writing before we produce it.

We won't send the order to print until we've received your written approval, so please reply to confirm you're happy with the draft. Once you've approved it, the order may move into production quickly, and changes may no longer be possible.

Uploading route files and route information

The Studio may allow you to use route files to create your own poster.

Our Studio may support route information from files or sources such as:

  • GPX;
  • KML;
  • KMZ;
  • Polarsteps;
  • CSV;
  • other supported route or location files, where available.

When you upload a supported route file, the original file is read and processed in your web browser, on your own device.

The original route file is not sent to us and is not stored on our servers. We cannot retrieve, download or view your original uploaded file because we do not have it.

You are responsible for making sure the file you upload is suitable for the poster you want to create.

Please do not upload route information that you are not comfortable using for a poster, or that you do not have permission to use.

What route/design data we keep

While you're designing, everything stays on your own device — nothing reaches us until you add your poster to the cart.

Your original file never reaches us.

When you upload a route file, it's read and processed in your web browser, on your own device. The original file is never sent to us and is never stored on our servers — we can't retrieve, download, or view it, because we simply don't have it.

Your work is saved locally while you design.

As you build your design, your browser automatically saves it on your device so you can close the tab and come back to it later. This uses your browser's own storage — it stays with you, and it isn't sent to us.

That locally saved design holds only design content: your style, size and orientation choices; the titles, subtitles, and stat labels you've typed; your colors; any markers you've placed; the simplified route from your file and its filename; and your map position. It holds no name, email address, or contact details.

It expires after up to 90 days without any edits (each edit restarts the clock), and some browsers may clear it sooner. If you clear your browser data, your in-progress design goes with it.

What we receive when you add to cart.

When you click "Add to cart", your design is sent to us so we can prepare your print file. What we receive is the same design content described above — the simplified route line, your markers and their labels, your titles and design choices, and the filename — with no name, email, or contact details attached to it.

We don't keep a copy of your original GPS recording or every raw GPS point, and we don't link your trail data to you personally. Your name, email, and shipping address are collected separately at checkout by Shopify, not by our Studio.

How long we keep it.

  • If you don't complete your purchase: we delete the design data 12 months after it was added to your cart.
  • If you buy the poster: we keep the design data alongside your order records, so we can produce your poster, support it, reprint it if you ask, and — if you ever raise a problem with it — check the printed poster against the design you submitted.

Asking us to delete it.

You can ask us to delete your design data at contact@tellyourtrail.com. Two things worth knowing first:

  • If we delete it, we won't be able to reprint your poster or recreate it.
  • While your 2-year legal guarantee is still running, we normally need to keep the design you submitted so we can assess any claim about your poster — including comparing the print against what you approved. After that period, we'll delete it on request.

Your order, invoice, and tax records are kept separately, and we're required by Italian law to retain them.

You'll find the full picture in our Privacy Policy.

Preview, proof and customer approval

Studio orders are approved at checkout. Manual custom orders are approved in writing by email.

There are two approval processes, depending on how your design is created.

Studio-created and self-personalized orders. For these, the preview shown before checkout is the design you're submitting for production — by placing your order, you're approving it. We don't send a separate proof afterwards; the design happens online, and you're responsible for checking the preview carefully before you order. Once the order is placed, it may move into file preparation or production quickly, and changes may no longer be possible.

Manual customization and bespoke orders. For these, we always send you a draft by email before printing. Please check it carefully and give us your approval in writing before we produce it — by email, or another written method we confirm with you. We won't send a manual or bespoke order to print until we've received your written approval. Once you've approved it, the order may move into production quickly, and changes may no longer be possible.

Spelling, route, layout and design checks

Please check everything carefully before you approve or submit your design.

Before placing a Studio order or approving a manual custom design, please check all details carefully.

This includes:

  • spelling;
  • names;
  • dates;
  • quotes;
  • event details;
  • title and subtitle;
  • route line;
  • waypoint names;
  • marker locations;
  • statistics;
  • color choices;
  • layout;
  • poster size;
  • orientation;
  • any other details shown in the preview, proof or draft.

We are not responsible for customer-entered mistakes or visible design details that were included in the Studio preview, submitted design, approved proof or approved draft.

This includes, for example:

  • spelling mistakes entered by you;
  • incorrect dates or names provided by you;
  • wrong titles, subtitles or quotes entered by you;
  • route data errors from your uploaded file;
  • incorrect waypoint names or markers selected by you;
  • statistics based on the route information you provided;
  • color, layout, size or orientation choices selected by you.

If the final printed product differs from the Studio preview you submitted or the proof/draft you approved because of our mistake or a production issue, we will review it under our Refunds, Returns & Cancellations Policy.

Changes, revisions and corrections

Changes are easiest before approval, checkout or production.

If you notice a mistake, contact us as soon as possible at contact@tellyourtrail.com.

For Studio-created or self-personalized orders, we may not be able to make changes after the order has been placed, especially once the order has moved into file preparation or production.

For manual customization or bespoke work, the number of included revisions depends on what was shown on the product page, agreed by email, or confirmed before work started.

Unless we agree otherwise, revisions must stay within the original scope of the order.

A revision does not include:

  • changing the entire concept;
  • changing to a different trail, route or adventure;
  • creating a new design direction;
  • adding major new details after work has started;
  • correcting customer-provided information after approval;
  • repeated changes beyond the agreed scope.

Extra revisions, major changes, or a new design direction may require an additional fee.

Once a design has been approved, submitted or sent to production, changes may no longer be possible.

Production and technical adjustments

Before printing, we prepare your approved design as a print-ready file — without changing how it looks.

Once your design is approved (or, for Studio orders, submitted at checkout), we prepare it as a print-ready file. This preparation is purely technical and does not change the appearance of the design you approved. It may include adjustments to:

  • file format and resolution;
  • color preparation for printing (for example, converting screen colors to print colors);
  • bleed, margins, and print-safe spacing at the edges;
  • production file setup.

The design you see and approve is the design we print. If the finished poster differs from what you approved or submitted because of a mistake on our side, that's our responsibility, and we'll handle it as an incorrect item under our Refunds, Returns & Cancellations Policy (sections 07 and 08).

Small differences between the screen preview and the printed poster can still happen, because screens and printers show color differently, and different papers naturally look and feel different. As long as the poster matches what was described and approved, this normal print variation is not a fault — you'll find a fuller explanation in our Terms of Service (section 05) and Refunds, Returns & Cancellations Policy (section 08).

Cancellations, returns and refunds

Custom and Studio-created products are made for you, so they can't be returned for a change of mind.

Studio-created, self-personalized, route-based, customized, and bespoke products are made using your choices, content, route data, or instructions. Because they're made to your specifications, they're exempt from the 14-day right of withdrawal under consumer law — so they can't be canceled, returned, or refunded for a change of mind once design work, file preparation, or production has started.

  • For Studio-created and self-personalized orders, production may start soon after you order, so please check your design carefully before placing it.
  • For manual customization or bespoke work, you can cancel before design work starts. Once it has, the design/service element isn't refundable for a change of mind, except where the law requires otherwise.

This is different from our standard catalog posters — designs bought exactly as shown, with no changes of your own — which do carry a 14-day right of withdrawal. You can read about that in our Refunds, Returns & Cancellations Policy (section 04).

None of this affects your rights if a product arrives damaged, defective, or incorrect, or doesn't match the Studio preview you submitted or the draft you approved because of our mistake — those are always covered (see Refunds sections 07 and 08).

You'll find the full cancellation, return, replacement, and refund rules in our Refunds, Returns & Cancellations Policy.

Digital PNG files

Where we offer digital files, they're personalized for you — so they can't be returned once we've started or delivered them.

From time to time, we may provide digital products, such as high-resolution PNG poster files.

At this stage, our digital files are personalized or custom-made for you — for example, a file created from your route, your details, or a bespoke or customized design. We don't currently sell our standard catalog designs as digital files.

We don't provide editable design files, source files, vector files, templates, working files, layered files, or software/design assets unless we expressly agree otherwise in writing.

Digital PNG files are delivered electronically and can't be physically returned.

Because these files are made to your specifications or clearly personalized for you, they're exempt from the 14-day right of withdrawal under consumer law. This means that, except where the law requires otherwise, a personalized digital file can't be canceled or refunded for change of mind once:

  • design work or file preparation has started;
  • the file has been delivered;
  • download access has been provided; or
  • the custom digital service has begun.

You may cancel a custom digital file before design work or file preparation starts.

You may use a digital PNG file only for the purpose agreed at the time of purchase — for example, printing it for your own use or display. You may not resell, redistribute, upload, share, copy, modify, recreate, extract, or otherwise exploit the file, whether for personal or commercial purposes, unless we've given you written permission.

If there's a technical problem with your file — for example, a corrupted or unreadable file — please contact us at contact@tellyourtrail.com and we'll try to fix it or provide a suitable replacement. This doesn't affect your rights if the file is faulty or doesn't match what was agreed.

Customer content and permissions

You must have the right to use anything you submit to us or add to your poster.

Customer content may include:

  • route files;
  • route data;
  • waypoint names;
  • marker locations;
  • titles;
  • subtitles;
  • names;
  • dates;
  • quotes;
  • event details;
  • logos;
  • text;
  • photos, if ever supported in future;
  • design instructions;
  • messages;
  • reviews;
  • feedback.

By submitting customer content, you confirm that:

  • you have the right to provide it to us;
  • we may use it to create, produce and support your order;
  • it does not infringe anyone else’s rights;
  • it does not contain unlawful, harmful, offensive or misleading material;
  • it does not contain private information about someone else without permission.

If your content includes another person’s name, route, location, event details, story or other personal information, you are responsible for having permission to use it.

If the content includes a child or minor, you confirm that you are their parent or legal guardian, or that you have permission from their parent or legal guardian.

Our designs and intellectual property

Buying a custom poster does not transfer ownership of our design system, templates or creative files.

Tell Your Trail owns or has permission to use the Tell Your Trail name, website, design system, templates, layout, artwork, illustration style, map styling, generated previews, print files, Studio logic, product copy and other creative materials.

Buying a Studio-created, personalized, custom or bespoke product does not transfer ownership of our intellectual property to you.

You may use the finished product you purchase in the way allowed at the time of purchase, such as displaying a physical poster in your home or giving it as a gift.

You may not copy, reproduce, screenshot, scan, trace, redraw, adapt, recreate, resell, redistribute, publish, upload, extract, reverse-engineer, or otherwise use our designs, previews, product files, templates, tools or creative materials without our written permission.

This applies to both personal and commercial use.

For business, event, club, tourism, wholesale, licensing or commercial use, please contact us first so we can agree the correct terms in writing.

Route accuracy and non-navigation use

Our posters are wall art, not navigation tools.

Tell Your Trail products are decorative wall art.

They are not official maps, navigation tools, safety tools, route guides, emergency resources, or trip-planning tools.

Route lines, elevation profiles, distances, statistics, marker positions and other design details may be simplified, stylized, rounded or adjusted for visual presentation.

Route statistics may vary from other apps, devices, files, maps or GPS tools because different systems calculate routes, elevation, distance and points differently.

You should not rely on a Tell Your Trail poster for navigation, safety, route planning, emergency decisions, legal boundaries, land access, or outdoor conditions.

Content we may refuse

We may refuse content or requests that are not suitable for Tell Your Trail.

We may refuse, cancel or ask you to change content, files, instructions or orders that we reasonably believe are:

  • unlawful;
  • harmful;
  • misleading;
  • abusive;
  • discriminatory;
  • hateful;
  • pornographic or explicit;
  • threatening or harassing;
  • infringing someone else’s rights;
  • unsafe or inappropriate;
  • technically unsuitable;
  • outside the scope of what we offer;
  • not compatible with our design style, tools or production process.

If we refuse or cancel an order for these reasons, we will explain the situation where appropriate and handle any payment already made in line with our Terms of Service and Refunds, Returns & Cancellations Policy.

Privacy and deletion requests

Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle personal information and route/design data.

We handle personal information, route/design data and customer content in line with our Privacy Policy.

As explained in that policy, we do not store your original uploaded route file. For Studio orders, we may keep simplified route/design data and the finished print file for production, support, reprints, corrections and order records.

If you want to ask us to delete trail/design data associated with your order, contact us at contact@tellyourtrail.com.

If we delete this data, we may no longer be able to reprint the same poster or provide certain order support.

We may still need to keep limited order, transaction, tax, legal or support records where required or appropriate.
