Custom map prints of a hike, a road trip and a canyon trail, framed on a wall

The Poster Studio

Where every adventure becomes a work of art.

A custom map print of your hike, run, ride or road trip

The hike you still talk about, your first marathon, the Sunday ride, the summer of six cities. Bring the route into our Studio, make it entirely yours, and hang the whole adventure on your wall.

Hikes, runs, rides, road trips and getaways

Every adventure leaves a line. What's yours?

Each of these is a custom map print made in our Poster Studio. Upload the GPX from Strava, Garmin or Komoot, import your Polarsteps trip, bring a map you made in Google My Maps, or simply type the places you went, and the Studio draws your route as personalized map art in the style and colors you choose. You check the proof on screen, and we print it on matte paper and ship it free.

Let's follow a few of them

Your trip, from start to finish.

Whether you spent two days hiking hut to hut or a summer hopping between cities, it all starts with the trail you took. Let's walk through how your adventure turns into art, one step at a time.

The day itself

You remember it in pieces.

The cold of the lake, the fog rolling over the bridge on a city trip, the moment at the top when nobody said anything for a while. A custom map poster of your route puts those pieces back together, in the order you lived them.

From your file to your wall

One evening, five decisions.

Designing your map poster takes five decisions and one last check, and most people are done in an evening. Here they are, screen by screen, just as you'd see them in the Studio.

1Bring your route

Start with whatever you have.

You don't need a GPX file to make a route map. A file from your watch, a trip you logged on your phone, or nothing but the places you remember. The Studio has a door for each, so pick the one that sounds like you.

you tracked it

Every twist and turn

Upload the track from Strava, Garmin, Komoot, Suunto or your watch app, and every bend appears exactly as you moved.

GPXKML / KMZ
you know where you stopped

Connect the dots

Import your Polarsteps trip, the map you saved in Google My Maps, or a list of places in our ready-made CSV template, and the Studio joins them with clean lines, by road, train, boat or plane.

Add them by hand

No file at all? Type the places in the order you went, right in the Studio. Perfect for the honeymoon, the interrail summer or a trip from years ago.

Left, a hike from a GPX file; right, six cities joined from a list of places, with the train legs, the drive and the flight each drawn their own way. Either way, your file is read in your browser and never leaves your device.

2Find its look

A style to start from, and a palette for every wall.

Every custom map print starts from one of our styles, which you then try in colors named after the places that inspired them. Go on, try it here.

Style

Explorer frames the map and puts your details in the corners, each with a label you write.

Palette

There are plenty more in the Studio, from soft Mist to deep Claret, plus a shuffle for when you can't decide and your own colors if you know exactly what you want.

Or make the colors your own

The same Alaska cruise, six ways: pick any color for the land, the water, the line and the text, and the Studio checks they still read well together.

3Mark the moments

A heart where it happened, a beach for the lazy days.

Every stop gets a name and, if you like, an icon of its own, and you can drag it to the exact spot. Add a heart or rings where something special happened, a tent, hotel or refuge for the places you stayed overnight, or a plane, train or boat for how you got there.

4Put words to it

A title, a line beneath it, and the details that matter.

Give your poster a title and a line beneath it, then add the details you want to remember, written your way: the distance and finish time of your first marathon, the climb on a trek, the number of cities you visited, or something only the two of you would put on a wall, like the meals you had along the way. If you'd rather keep it simple, Original has no stats, just the title and two lines of your own beneath it.

Explorer style: Berlin marathon title with distance, pace, finish time and date in the corners
Explorer puts them in the corners, each with a small label you write yourself.
Pathfinder style: Prosecco Hills ride title with a row of stats and icons
Pathfinder lines them up beneath the title, each with an icon you choose.
5Choose its shape and size

Tall for a coastline, wide for the view.

Turn it to portrait or landscape and the map moves to fit your route, like the cruise up the Inside Passage in this example. Then pick a size, in inches or centimeters, from one that fits a shelf to one that fills the wall above the sofa.

Your Wall

Made for, or given as a gift

The moments that deserve a wall.

Some of our favorite posters were never about the distance. As an anniversary map gift, a honeymoon keepsake or a present for someone's first race, a personalized map marks the spot where someone said yes or the city where it all began. It's also the kind of gift people stop and ask about.

Rather we made it for you?

Leave the design to us.

The Studio is there for anyone who enjoys putting their own poster together, but you don't have to. Tell us about your trip and we will design the whole poster just for you: the line itself, the places that mattered and the words you want under it. You will see a first draft within two to three working days, and from there it moves at your pace. Two rounds of changes are included, and so are the print and the shipping.

3

you approve it

Your first draft arrives within two to three working days. We fine-tune it with you over two rounds of changes, and once you are happy we print it and send it to your door.

Quick answers

Do I need a GPX file?

Not at all! If you tracked your trip, you can upload the GPX file from your watch or app. If you didn't, that's no problem either. Import your Polarsteps trip or a map you made in Google My Maps, fill in our CSV template, or simply type your stops into the Studio, and it joins them up for you by road, train, boat or plane.

Can I make a map of a road trip or a holiday?

Yes, definitely! The Studio works for every kind of adventure, whether it's a hike, your first marathon, a long bike ride, a road trip, an interrail summer or a weekend city break. For a trip with stops, just list the places in the order you went, and the drive, the train and the flight are each drawn in their own way.

Can I give it as a gift?

Yes, absolutely! Many of our custom map prints end up as gifts. You can design one for someone and have it shipped straight to their door, or give them a gift card so they can make their own.

Which apps and files work?

Most of them! If your app can save a GPX file, it will work, and that includes Strava, Garmin Connect, Suunto and Komoot. Google My Maps works too, because it saves maps as KML or KMZ files and the Studio reads both. Traveled with Polarsteps? Download a copy of your data from your Polarsteps account settings, unzip it, open your trip’s folder and upload the trip.json inside. And if you didn’t use an app at all, download our CSV template in the Studio, list your places in order and upload it.

Does my file go to your servers?

No, your file stays with you. The Studio reads it right there in your browser, and the original is never sent to us. The only thing we receive is the finished design, once you add the poster to your cart: the simplified line, your markers, titles and colors, and your file’s name. Never your name, email or address — Shopify collects those at checkout.

Will I see it before it's printed?

Yes, and what you see is exactly what gets printed. So take your time checking the names, dates and spelling before you add it to your cart, because once you order, it goes straight to the printer.

How long does it take?

We make every poster to order, which usually takes 2 to 5 business days. Delivery then takes between 3 and 20 business days, depending on where in the world it's going.
