The Horse-Shoe Trail has a length of 140 miles / 230 km and was developed for both hikers and horseback riders, hence the trail's name. The history of the trail lies in the rich Iron Industry of the 18th and 19th centuries. During that time, many of the furnaces and forges were connected by trails. Parts of these trails survived and now form the basis of the Horse-Shoe Trail, one of the best hiking spots in Pennsylvania. Over time the trail has expanded, and it has been open for the public to enjoy since 1935. Starting in the Valley Forge National Park, the trail runs westwards and gives you the opportunity to explore the region’s rural landscapes and visit local landmarks such as the ruins of the many furnaces and forges. Further, the trail will pass through beautiful wineries, farms, and some refreshing streams before connecting with and ending on the Appalachian Trail near Stoney Mountain. While the trail is open to the public, it is important to note that a large portion of the trail runs through private land.
