The Israel National Trail was established in 1995 and inspired by a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail. The trail can be walked both South to North and vice versa, with the Northern trailhead being at Dan, near the Israel-Lebanon Frontier, and the Southern Trailhead at Eilat, on the Red Sea. The trail traverses a wide range of landscapes and is rich in flora, fauna, and culture. Along the way, you are rewarded with red stone desert hills, rugged mountains, lush green forests, and beautiful lakes. The path is well marked with a white, blue, and orange striped marker which is said to reflect the snow of the Hermon Mountain, the Mediterranean Sea, and the desert. Some of the highlights you pass along the route are the Mediterranean coast, the River Jordan, the Negev desert, and the Galilee region.
