Mount Hood sits at the center of this Timberline Trail map poster, ringed by the 42 mi (67 km) loop that circles it near the treeline, from Timberline Lodge past Paradise Park, Elk Cove and Cairn Basin.

Hiking the Timberline Trail around Mount Hood

The Timberline Trail is a 42 mi (67 km) loop around Mount Hood, Oregon's highest peak, held close to the treeline the whole way round. From Timberline Lodge on the south slope it drops into Zigzag Canyon, wade across the Sandy River, crosses the wildflower meadows of Paradise Park, Cairn Basin and Elk Cove on the north side, and tops out near 7,300 ft (2,230 m) on Gnarl Ridge before returning to the lodge.

Most hikers go clockwise over three to five days, sharing the first 11 mi (18 km) with the Pacific Crest Trail, and climb about 10,800 ft (3,290 m). Every glacier on the mountain sends a river down the slope, and the trail drops into each canyon, traverses the water and climbs back out; the Eliot Branch and White River crossings can run high on summer afternoons.

Civilian Conservation Corps crews joined older trails into a full loop in 1934, and two of their stone shelters, at Cairn Basin and Cooper Spur, still stand beside it. Glacial fords, wildflower meadows and one ring around Mount Hood: relive the whole Timberline Trail on a map poster.
